SIENA, ITALY
|
The Lady of the Hills
Siena lies on the softly rolling hills of the countryside between the valleys of three rivers. It is one of the finest examples of a Medieval city, with its sober, austere beauty, clustered in the maze of narrow streets and alleys around one of the loveliest square in Italy: Piazza del Campo. More intimate and more appealing than Florence, Siena is the main rival for the attentions of visitors. More intimate and

Piazza del
Campo All
roads in Siena lead to the Piazza del Campo, one of Europe's greatest Medieval
squares. The square occupies the site of the old Roman forum and for long time
it was the city principal marketplace, now host to the famous Palio bareback
horse race.
It assumed its present shape
in 1293 when "The Council of Nine Good Men" began to acquire land to create a
grand civic "piazza". The red brick paving is divided into nine fields
commemorating the beneficent rule of the council. The square is shaped like an
amphitheater or like a perfect shell, the citizens prefer to think that it is
shaped like the protecting cloak of the Virgin. .
