Accademia Gallery
Visitors from
all over the world come to Accademia Gallery in Florence to gaze upon David, the
most famous nude male in the history of art. Several
other masterpieces by Michelangelo including The Prisoners
are housed here.
Michelangelo was twenty-five years
of age when in 1501 he started to work on the statue
of David. It took three years to complete and when finished
it was the largest sculpture since the Roman period,
standing 4 meters and 10 centimeters in height.
David is the
symbol of Renaissance virile beauty and now the object
of particular devotion by tourists from all over the
world.
The Prisoners
Huge and terrible
they have bodies who fight to escape from their marble
prison in a physical and spiritual struggle.
Michelangelo
worked for almost forty years on these sculptures, but they were never
completed. They are magnificent examples of Michelangelo's
so called "Unfinished Style".
