Palazzo
Vecchio
While the "Old Palace"
retains its medieval appearance, the interior had been
remodeled in behalf of Duke Cosimo I during the Renaissance
period.
Vasari
was commissioned to redecorate the interior after Leonardo
and Michelangelo had refused the work.
Vasari incorporated
bombastic frescoes describing Florentine triumphs over
Pisa and Siena.
Of particular interest is the Salone
dei Cinquecento, full of statues, among them the Victory
by Michelangelo and frescoes by Vasari.
Another
attraction is the Room of Maps retaining the valuable
collection of 53 geographic maps painted by monks.
