Santa Croce
The Basilica
of Santa Croce is, perhaps, the most beautiful Gothic
church in Italy. Began by the
great Arnolfo di Cambio, it has been continuosly enriched
with works by artists like Giotto, Donatello, Canova. In the 18th century
it became a Pantheon for eminent citizens: Machiavelli,
Ghiberti, Michelangelo, Galileo, Rossini are buried
here.
The most celebrated works in the church
are Giotto's frescoes, illustrating scenes from the
life of St. Francis in the Peruzzi Chapel, including
The Legends of St. John the Evangelist and St. John
the Baptist in the Bardi Chapel.
Beyond the cloister
stands the Pazzi Chapel conceived by Brunelleschi. A
Renaissance masterpiece of the purest harmony.
The funeral monument of Michelangelo designed
by Vasari. The three figures around the tomb represent
Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.
The second image
is the tomb of Galileo Galilei by Foggini.
