Duomo, known as the cathedral of
Santa Maria del Fiore, is one of the most majestic building
of Italy and the crown jewel of Florence. From the center
of town it rises above in all its glory, announcing
to the world that Florence was the birthplace of the
Renaissance. Giotto, Brunelleschi and Ghiberti
speak directly to the heart and mind of man, withstanding
the test of time and transcends cultural boundaries.
Campanile, the square
tower next to the cathedral, designed by Giotto in 1334,
was completed in 1359, 22 years after his death. Standing
approximately 85 meters tall, the exterior is completely
covered with white, green and pink marble tiles and
adorned with relief designed by Andrea Pisano and statues,
which represent prophets and sibyls (female prophets).
The 11th-century Baptistery is one of
the oldest monuments of Florence. The exterior is white
marble with beautiful geometric decorations.
Lorenzo
Ghiberti designed two of the famous doors. One on the
north has panels illustrating the Life of Christ; the
east door depicts scenes of the Old Testament.
According to history, Michelangelo
described the Baptistery's east doors as so beautiful
they are worthy to be called "The Gates of Paradise".
