Sant'
Ambrogio
The Basilica of Sant' Ambrogio represent
to the Milanese what Mecca represent to the Muslims.
Sixteen centuries old, Sant' Ambrogio represents the
history of Milan.
Originally founded
in 379 by Saint Ambrose, Milan's first bishop and the
city's patron saint, the basilica was enlarged in the
9th. century and later in the 11th. century, becoming
the finest medieval building in Milan.
We recommend
that if you plan to visit this church, to arrive prior
to the opening of the external doors to witness a breath
taking revelation of the imposing courtyard leading
to the church.
Inside, Sant' Ambrogio contains beautiful
treasures: The fine rib vaulting, the handsome pulpit,
the altar decorated with gold, silver and precious gems
from the 9th. century, the mosaic of the apse, the frescoes
by Tiepolo and the shining mosaics in the chapel of
Saint Vittore, 1600 years old.
Image on the
right shows the superb artistic work of the pulpit.
