San Gennaro Cathedral
The Cathedral San Gennaro is the religious
heart of Naples; it is a magnificent Gothic warehouse
of relics from every period of Naples history.
The Cathedral
was built between 1294 and 1323 during the reigns of
Charles II of Anjou and his son Robert.
The façade
is mostly 19th Century, since the original face was
destroyed during an earthquake.
The interior has a wonderful coffer ceiling
covering the central aisle and ancient granite columns
that line the nave.
Also one can
see an interesting array of monuments in tribute to
past bishops of the church.
