Castel dell'Ovo - Egg Castle
The castle a very ancient Norman stronghold,
occupies a small island facing and joining Santa Lucia's
harbor. The construction
began in 1115 by king Roger II on a pre-existent Roman
building, perhaps the villa of the famous Roman patrician
Lucullus. The beautiful columns are still visible.
Castel dell'
Ovo (Egg Castle) took its name from the legend: The
great Latin poet and wizard Virgil buried in its depths
a magic egg, which if broken, would bring bad luck to
the town. Today the castle houses an interesting prehistoric
museum with over 4000 object from agricultural, artisan
and domestic spheres of primitive ages from 70,000 to
3,000 years BC.
