Capitol
Square
The Capitol designed by Michelangelo
in 1536.
This
splendid Renaissance palace is now the seat of city
government built on the ruins of the Acropolis, the
religious and political center of ancient Rome.
The
great staircase leading to the Capital building is presided
by two colossal statues of Castor and Pollux.
The great Equestrian statue of the Emperor
Marcus Aurelius emphasized the geometrical quality of
the square, one of the clearest spatial solutions of
the Renaissance.
In order not to leave the square without
a fundamental reference point a copy of the Equestrian
statue stands in its place.
