Leonardo's vision of the beginning of Christ's agony is one of European art's best known images. Capturing the moment Christ announces He will be betrayed by one of his disciples.
Leonardo chose to apply oil and tempera to a dry surfase, rather then the accepted fresco method of painting pigment on to wet plaster. This allows him greater flexibility of tone and colour, but moisture soon began to corrode the painting.
