The most impressive work of art, found within the walls of St Peters is Michelangelo's Pieta completed in 1499 at the age of 25. The vast amount of masterpieces are housed within the Vatican museums largest in the world, including the Sistine Chapel and Ralphels Rooms.

Michelangelo's frescoes in the Sistine Chapel are the pinnacle of European artistic achievement. The 930 sq. m. ceiling took four years to complete, Michelangelo lying recumbent most of the time to paint. The frescoes are divide into nine section, arranged chronologically.
