San Marco Square
and Clock Tower
People come by the thousands from the
four corners of the world to become actors on the largest
stage in the world: San Marco Square in Venice.
Once
it was the symbol of religious power with San Marco
Basilica, the Doge's Palace the central political power,
Procuratie standing for justice and the Marcian library
for culture.
No
longer home to the Venetian but to the visitors, vendors
and flocks of pigeons that arrive at dawn waiting to
be fed.
Like
a candy store is to a child, the same is true about
Saint Mark's Square; from here one can find the finest
shops to buy whatever your heart desire. For those who
want to touch and feel history then look no further,
for a cultural experience waiting to be explore.
Napoleon
once stated: " San Marco Square is the most elegant
setting room in all Europe". Truly it is! Sitting
at the café, drinking cappuccino, listening to
the orchestra is an enjoyable moment and the memories
will last a lifetime.
Clock Tower
This
unique historical clock standing on the north side of
Saint Mark Square is currently shielded from view under
protective covering during the renovation phase.
The
large clock face displays the hours of the day, various
phases of the moon and the movement of the sun
through the signs of the zodiac symbols. Above the clock
face one can see the winged lion of Saint Mark against
a backdrop of blue with gold stars.
At
the very top of the tower are two bronze figures of
Moors holding a club preparing to strike the bell indicating
the time of day.
