Santa
Maria Gloriosa Dei Frari
Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa Dei Frari
is the largest church in Venice after Saint Mark's. The
massive complex built from brick and marble contains
a treasury of exceptional paintings and sculptures among
them artworks by Titian, Bellini, Donatello, Canova
and Sansovino.
Assumption of the Virgin by Titian (Tiziano)
in 1518
Over
the main altar of the church is Titian's famous masterpiece
the "Assumption of the Virgin".
From
this painting we can easily see that Titian is set apart
from all others in his ability of using rich vibrant
colors and dynamic composition.
Madonna and Child by Giovanni
Bellini 1488
The
triptych is considered the artist's greatest work and
one of Venice most beautiful Renaissance painting.
Canova' s tomb
Canova
designed this neo-classical marble pyramid, decorated
by weeping figures, as a mausoleum for Titian, but it
was never built.
After
Canova's death, the sculptor's pupils used the design
for their master's tomb.
